ColorOS on Xiaomi Pad 5 How to Flash Step by Step Guide
Part of Xiaomi guides, HyperOS guides, 2025 guides.
You are putting ColorOS on a Xiaomi Pad 5 — a port, not an official build, so the usual stock tricks will not save you here. This is the order that works: unlock the bootloader, get the driver right, flash the recovery and vbmeta, format data, then flash the ColorOS package and wait out the first boot.

Putting a ColorOS port on a Pad 5 is the kind of flash that rewards patience and punishes shortcuts. You are not installing software Xiaomi built for this tablet. You are borrowing an interface designed for other hardware and hoping the tablet cooperates. When it works, the Pad 5 feels brand new — a different launcher, different quick settings, a different set of stock apps. When it goes wrong, it usually goes wrong at one of four boring steps.
So the boring steps are the whole job. Get them right and the rest is a copy-and-flash.
What you actually need
- An unlocked bootloader. ColorOS will not boot on a locked one, and unlocking wipes the tablet. Do this first, not last.
- The ColorOS port package made for the Xiaomi Pad 5 specifically — link below.
- A compatible recovery image and the vbmeta the build asks for. Do not grab a recovery built for a phone and hope.
- ADB and fastboot working on your PC. The free Rom Flasher tool bundles the driver install into a couple of clicks if Device Manager keeps showing an unknown device. Link is in the downloads.
- A real data cable and a battery above 50%.
- A backup. Every step below touches data.
Step 1 — unlock the bootloader
Nothing else in this guide works until this is done. Xiaomi's unlock has a waiting period tied to the Mi account you bind to the tablet, and there is no legitimate way around it. Start it the day you decide you want to flash. If you rush this part, you either waste a week or you go looking for shortcuts that do not exist.
Unlocking erases the tablet. Move your files off before you begin, not after.
Step 2 — driver, then confirm the PC sees the tablet
Install the ADB and fastboot driver, then power the Pad 5 off and hold Volume Down + Power until you land on the fastboot screen. Plug it in and run:
fastboot devices
You want a serial number and the word fastboot. An empty result means the driver is missing. Fix that before Step 3 — a recovery you cannot push is a dead end, and this is where most people first get stuck.
Step 3 — flash the recovery and vbmeta
Boot the compatible recovery image the build requires. Then flash the vbmeta image that goes with this port. The vbmeta piece matters on ports because verification is what stops a foreign system image from starting. Take the vbmeta that ships with the package — not one pulled from a different ROM.
If the recovery refuses to boot, it is almost always the wrong recovery for the device. Go back and check which tablet it was built for.
Step 4 — format data before you flash anything
Do this now, not later. Formatting after the flash leaves you fighting a bootloop and guessing which step you got wrong. A full format gives the ColorOS port a clean slate to land on, which is the single biggest factor in whether the first boot completes.
Everything on internal storage goes here. Photos, downloads, files you forgot about. This is why Step 0 is a backup.
Step 5 — flash ColorOS and be patient
Flash the ColorOS port package, then reboot to system. The first boot on a port is genuinely slow — far slower than an official ROM. Give it time before you decide it has failed. Staring at a logo for several minutes is normal here.
When it does come up, set the language and finish the setup wizard before you touch anything else. If something is going to break, you want it breaking on an empty tablet.
Where people get stuck
- Rushing the unlock. It is the one step you cannot redo quickly, and the wait is measured in days.
- The wrong recovery. A recovery built for another device can boot far enough to look fine and then fail in the middle of a write.
- Expecting official behaviour. This is a port. The camera, the pen and the keyboard extras may not behave the way stock HyperOS did. That is the trade, not a bug in one specific build.
One honest note
Ports are the least forgiving kind of flash, and this one is no exception. The rewards are real — the tablet genuinely feels unfamiliar again — but you should go in expecting a couple of rough edges rather than a clean, official-feeling system. If a feature you rely on daily matters more to you than a fresh interface, this is the wrong build for your Pad 5.

Full description from the video
ColorOS is running on the Xiaomi Pad 5 — a completely different interface from HyperOS, and this is the way to flash it without getting lost.
Putting ColorOS on a Pad 5 is a port job, which means you're borrowing software built for other hardware and hoping the tablet cooperates. The reward is a tablet that feels genuinely unfamiliar again — its own launcher, its own quick settings, its own set of stock apps. The catch is that ports are the least forgiving kind of flash, so the boring steps matter more here than anywhere else.
Do the basics properly and your odds go way up: unlock the bootloader, install the ADB driver, back up your data, keep the cable in. Then take the steps slowly and don't skip the format.
📱 Device : Xiaomi Pad 5

🛠️ What You Need
- The ColorOS port package for the Xiaomi Pad 5
- ADB and Fastboot driver on your PC

- A full backup and a charged battery
- A USB cable that isn't going to drop the connection halfway
📝 Steps
- Unlock the bootloader first — nothing else works until that's done.
- Install the driver on your PC and confirm fastboot detects the tablet.
- Flash the recovery and the vbmeta the build needs.
- Format data before flashing the ColorOS package.
- Flash the ROM, reboot to system, and be patient with the first boot.
⚠️ Where People Get Stuck
- Rushing the bootloader unlock, which is the one step you can't redo easily.
- Using a recovery built for a different device.
- Expecting a port to behave exactly like an official ROM.
Common questions
Do I need to unlock the bootloader to install ColorOS on the Xiaomi Pad 5?
Yes, and nothing works before it. A locked bootloader will refuse the recovery and the ROM. Unlocking also wipes the tablet, so bind your Mi account and start the wait before you plan the flash.
Why does the tablet bootloop after flashing ColorOS?
The usual cause is flashing the ROM without formatting data first. A port needs a clean data partition, so format data before the flash, not after, and give the very slow first boot several minutes.
Will installing a ColorOS port wipe my data?
Yes. Both the bootloader unlock and the required data format erase internal storage. Move your photos and files off the Pad 5 before you start, and expect the setup wizard on first boot.
What is the vbmeta file for on this port?
It disables the verification that would otherwise stop a system image built for different hardware from starting. Take the vbmeta that ships with the ColorOS port package for the Pad 5 rather than one from another ROM.
Can I go back to HyperOS after this?
Yes. A stock fastboot package for the Pad 5 flashes straight back over the port. You will be starting from a wiped tablet again, so take a backup of anything you made while running ColorOS.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
