PixelOS Pure Google ROM on Xiaomi Pad 5 Full Flash Guide
Part of Xiaomi guides, PixelOS guides, 2024 guides.
PixelOS brings a pure Google experience to the Xiaomi Pad 5: stock Pixel launcher, Google's own apps, no manufacturer extras. It is a custom ROM, so it is a clean flash — back up first, install the driver, flash the recovery and vbmeta, format data, then flash the ROM. Google apps are already in the build.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
You want the Pad 5 to feel like a big Pixel. Stock launcher, stock icons, Google's own apps, and none of the manufacturer extras you never asked for. That is exactly what PixelOS is for.
It suits the big screen well. The layout is simple, the settings are where you expect them, and there is far less to dig through than on HyperOS. If you have ever spent five minutes hunting for a toggle in a heavily skinned ROM, you will appreciate how little there is here.
Because it is a custom ROM, it is a clean flash. That means the data format is not optional. Treat it as part of the installation, not a step you can skip to save ten minutes.
What you get
- The stock Pixel launcher and Google apps.
- A clean settings menu without the extra vendor layers.
- None of the manufacturer bloat apps.
- A layout that actually suits the tablet's big screen instead of a stretched phone interface.
What you need
- The PixelOS ROM package for the Xiaomi Pad 5.
- The ADB and Fastboot driver installed on your PC.
- Platform Tools, so the fastboot and adb commands work.
- A compatible recovery.
- The vbmeta file the build requires, if the release notes call for one.
- A full backup and a charged battery.
Two download links are below — a main link and an alternative mirror. If one is slow, try the other rather than hammering the same one.
Step 1 - back up and charge
Do this before anything else. Copy your photos, documents and downloads off the tablet, and charge it properly. A flash that dies at twenty percent creates a problem you do not want to debug. Take the twenty minutes now.
Step 2 - install the driver and confirm fastboot sees the tablet
Install the ADB and Fastboot driver, boot the tablet to fastboot, and confirm your PC can see it before you flash anything. No serial number means no driver. Retrying the commands will not fix that.
If the driver step is the one that always slows you down, the free Rom Flasher tool on GitHub bundles the ADB and fastboot driver install into a couple of clicks. It is free, and the link is with the others on this page.
Step 3 - flash the recovery and the vbmeta file
Flash the recovery that matches the Pad 5, and flash the vbmeta file the build requires. Getting vbmeta wrong is a common reason a freshly flashed ROM refuses to boot, so do not skip it because it looks like an optional extra. Follow the release notes for the package you downloaded.
Step 4 - format data
Format data in recovery. This is the step people are tempted to skip, and it is exactly the step that matters on a clean flash. Without it, the old data from HyperOS or whatever you were running sits underneath the new build and causes boot problems.
Clean flash means clean. There is no version of this where keeping your data is the safer choice.
Step 5 - flash PixelOS and reboot
Flash the PixelOS zip, then reboot to system. The first boot takes a while. Let it finish without interference, then walk through the setup like a fresh Pixel.
Here is a small reassurance: Google apps do not need a separate install. They are already in the build. If you were bracing yourself for a second Gapps flash, you can relax.
Where people get stuck
- Skipping the data format. Clean flash means clean. Skipping it is the most common reason a PixelOS flash boots to a black screen or hangs at the logo.
- Grabbing a package built for a different Pad model. Match the tablet exactly. A build for another variant will flash and then misbehave in ways that are hard to read.
- Assuming Google apps need a separate install. They are already included in the build, so adding a Gapps package on top can cause its own problems.
One honest note
A custom ROM means you are on your own for updates compared to an official build. Keep the working package and the stock fastboot file somewhere safe, so if a build misbehaves you have a way back instead of a long evening. That habit has saved me more than once.
Who should install it
Install it if you want a clean Pixel-style tablet and you are comfortable with a full clean flash. Skip it if you depend on the manufacturer's own apps, or if you cannot back up right now. There is no half-measure here.

Common questions
Do I need to flash Gapps with PixelOS on the Pad 5?
No. PixelOS is the pure Google build, so the launcher and Google apps are already in it. Adding a separate Gapps package on top is not needed and can cause its own problems.
Is PixelOS a clean flash on the Xiaomi Pad 5?
Yes. It is a custom ROM, so you format data as part of the install. Skipping the format is the usual reason a flash boots to a black screen.
Do I need a vbmeta file for PixelOS?
Follow the release notes for the package you download. Flashing the recovery and the required vbmeta file before the ROM is the normal route, and skipping vbmeta is a common cause of a ROM that will not boot.
How long does the first boot take after flashing PixelOS?
Longer than a normal reboot. The tablet rebuilds caches on a clean flash, so give it several minutes and leave it alone. If it is still stuck after that, redo the data format and flash again.
Can I go back to HyperOS if I do not like PixelOS?
Yes. Flash the official fastboot package for your model. Keep that file somewhere safe before you start, so going back is a download away instead of a search.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
