MIUI 14 on Xiaomi Pad 5 Fastboot Flash with MI Flash Tool
Part of Xiaomi guides, MIUI guides, 2023 guides.
MIUI 14 for the Xiaomi Pad 5 can be installed with MI Flash Tool from the fastboot package rather than waiting on an OTA. Point the tool at the extracted folder, pick your flash option, and start. It normally wipes the tablet, so back up first and keep the cable connected until it finishes.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
Fastboot installs are the honest way to move a Xiaomi device between MIUI versions. No recovery menus, no waiting on an update that may never show up for your region. It is also the route where people get casual and brick something, because fastboot does exactly what you tell it and nothing else.
On the Pad 5 the process itself is short once you are set up properly. The setup decides whether it takes ten minutes or an entire evening. This page is about the MI Flash Tool route, from the package download to the first boot.
What you need
- The MIUI 14 fastboot package for the Pad 5, linked below.
- MI Flash Tool installed on a Windows PC.
- Platform tools, so adb and fastboot are actually available on the machine.
- A decent USB cable. A cheap one is the classic reason a flash dies halfway.
- The tablet charged and your data backed up.
Note the difference again: this needs the fastboot package, not the recovery zip. MI Flash Tool reads the folder full of images and scripts, and a recovery package does not have that inside it.
Step 1 - download and extract the package
Get the MIUI 14 fastboot package for the Pad 5 and extract it into a folder you can point to later. Use 7-Zip or WinRAR. The built-in Windows extractor sometimes flattens the structure, and MI Flash Tool needs that structure intact. Match the model exactly — a package for another Pad variant is not a safe swap.
Step 2 - install MI Flash Tool and check it sees the device
Install MI Flash Tool and connect the tablet with it booted, so you can confirm the tool detects it. If it does not appear in the list, the driver or the cable is the problem, and that is worth solving now rather than halfway through a flash.
If the driver side is what always slows you down, the free Rom Flasher tool on GitHub bundles the ADB and fastboot driver install so you are not fighting Device Manager first. It is free, and the link is with the others on this page.
Step 3 - boot the Pad 5 into fastboot
Power the tablet off, then hold Volume Down and Power until the fastboot screen appears. Plug it into the PC. Confirm the connection in MI Flash Tool before you load anything.
Step 4 - point MI Flash Tool at the folder and choose your option
In MI Flash Tool, select the extracted ROM folder, then choose your flash option. The safe default keeps your data only if the versions line up, and a full flash writes everything and resets the tablet. When in doubt, choose the option that wipes. A clean write avoids the mismatched-partition problems that come from trying to keep data across a version change.
Read the options before you click start. This is the one screen where a wrong choice is expensive.
Step 5 - start the flash and leave it alone
Click start and walk away from the tablet. Do not unplug the cable. Do not close the window. Do not move the tablet to check if it is alive. The progress bar is not always honest, and a big package takes a while on a tablet.
If it fails partway through, leave the cable in and read the error before you act. Do not yank the connection. Most interrupted flashes can be rerun once the cable and port are stable.
Step 6 - let the first boot take its time
When the flash finishes, the tablet reboots on its own. The first boot after a full flash is slow. Let it work and do not interfere. When the setup wizard appears, set the tablet up fresh.
Where people get stuck
- Grabbing the recovery package. MI Flash Tool cannot use it. Take the fastboot package.
- A broken folder structure. Extract with 7-Zip or WinRAR so MI Flash Tool can read the folder the way the package expects.
- A cable or USB port that gives up mid-flash. If it dies partway, that is almost always the connection rather than the ROM.
One honest note
MI Flash Tool adds its own driver step and its own folder requirements, which is why some people skip it and run the flash script directly from the ROM folder. Both routes work. Pick one and stick with it rather than mixing the two halfway through.
Whatever route you take, back up first. A fastboot install normally wipes the tablet, and there is no partial version of that. Move your photos and files off before you start.
Who should use this route
Use MI Flash Tool if you want a graphical tool with a visible list of detected devices and a progress bar, and you are comfortable with one extra driver step. Skip it if you would rather not install another tool — the flash script in the ROM folder does the same job without it.

Use the file built for your exact model and region. A package for another variant is the quickest way to a phone that will not boot.

❓ Quick Answers
- Will this wipe my data? A fastboot install normally wipes, so back up first.
- Can I do it without a PC? No, fastboot needs one.
- Do I need an unlocked bootloader? For official packages you can flash as is, but an unlocked bootloader gives you options if something goes wrong.
- What if the flash fails halfway? Don't panic and don't unplug. Check the cable and port, then run it again.
Common questions
Does MI Flash Tool wipe my Xiaomi Pad 5?
A fastboot install normally wipes, and that is the safer choice when the versions differ. Back up your photos and files first, and expect the setup wizard on first boot.
Can I install MIUI 14 without a PC?
No. Fastboot needs a PC, and MI Flash Tool runs on Windows. There is no tablet-only route for a full package install.
Do I need an unlocked bootloader for MIUI 14?
For official packages you can flash without unlocking, but an unlocked bootloader gives you more options if something goes wrong. Unlocking itself wipes the tablet.
What should I do if the flash fails halfway through?
Do not unplug anything and do not panic. Read the error, check the cable and the USB port, then run the flash again. An interrupted flash is usually recoverable once the connection is stable.
Do I need to use MI Flash Tool, or can I just run the script?
Both work. The ROM folder contains its own flash script that does the same job without MI Flash Tool. Use whichever you trust more, but do not switch between them mid-flash.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
