Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Android 13 Update Install & Complete Walkthrough
Part of Xiaomi guides, MIUI guides, 2022 guides.
The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 got Android 13, and installing it is a normal update on the tablet rather than a flash. You download it, install it, reboot, and then spend a while finding your way around the new layout. Here is what the update does and what to check once it is done.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
Tablets do not get the same attention as phones, and that is why the same question keeps coming up about the Mi Pad 5. It is a great screen and a solid media machine, and an Android update is the difference between it feeling current and feeling forgotten.
This update takes the Mi Pad 5 to Android 13. It is the Xiaomi Pad 5, codename nabu — not the Pro. If you are on the Pro, this is not the one for you.
What you need
- The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 (nabu).
- A charged battery. Above half is a sensible floor.
- Wi-Fi, if you are downloading the update over the air.
- A backup, if you have anything on the tablet you would be sad to lose.
That backup line is not just me being careful. Normal updates do not wipe your data, but a backup costs you nothing and has saved me more than once when a manual step went sideways.
Step 1 — do the backup first
Copy your photos, downloads and documents off the tablet before you start. Yes, a normal update keeps your data. Do it anyway. It takes five minutes and it removes the only scenario where this becomes a bad day.
Step 2 — install the update
For most people this is the regular update path: check for the update on the tablet and install it over Wi-Fi. Let it download fully before you start the install. An update that downloads halfway and stalls is more annoying than one you waited an extra ten minutes for.
If you are installing it manually instead of over the air, keep in mind that a manual flash can wipe your data where a normal update does not. Check before you commit, and make sure the backup from step 1 is actually done.
Step 3 — the reboot and the wait
The tablet reboots to apply the update. The first boot afterwards is slower than usual because Android is rebuilding caches and optimising apps in the background. Do not panic, and do not force it off.
Step 4 — walk through what changed
Once it is up, this is the part worth slowing down for. Take a few minutes to actually look around instead of jumping straight back into an app:
- Home screens. The layout and spacing are the first thing you notice on a big display.
- Settings. Some of what you knew has moved. Give it a browse rather than hunting for one specific toggle.
- Notifications and quick settings. The pull-down looks different, and the tablet layout is the interesting bit.
- Gestures and navigation. Check whether your usual gestures still feel the same or shifted slightly.
- The general feel in the hand. Responsiveness is the real test. Scrolling and switching apps tells you more than any list of features.
Step 5 — open your heavy apps first
Do not wait until tomorrow to find out whether something broke. Open your bank app, your streaming app, your browser, and anything you use daily. If one of them has a problem on the new Android version, you want to know now and not when you need it in a hurry. This is also where a certified Play Store matters — if your store is not certified, a couple of apps will refuse to run.
What this update does not do
It does not magically turn the Pad 5 into a new tablet. It is the same hardware. What changes is that the software underneath is current, which means apps written for newer Android versions behave the way they were meant to, and the tablet stops feeling like it was left behind.
What to watch out for
- Clearing the cache before you need to. If something behaves oddly after the update, a reboot fixes most of it. Only start clearing things if a reboot does not.
- Low battery during install. Do not run the update on a nearly empty tablet.
- Assuming a manual flash is as safe as the normal update. It is not. A normal update keeps your data; a manual flash can take it.
If you ever need to flash rather than update, the free Rom Flasher tool on GitHub gives you a friendly way to handle the driver side. The link is in the downloads section.

Use the file built for your exact model and region. A package for another variant is the quickest way to a phone that will not boot.

Common questions
Is this Android 13 update for the Mi Pad 5 or the Mi Pad 5 Pro?
This is the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5, codename nabu. It is not for the Pad 5 Pro, which is a different device and takes a different package.
Will installing the Android 13 update wipe my data?
A normal over-the-air update does not wipe your data. Flashing it manually can, so check the method you are using before you start, and keep a backup either way.
Do I really need to back up before updating?
Yes. The normal update path should keep everything, but a backup takes a few minutes and protects you if anything goes wrong. There is no downside to having one.
Will my apps still work after the update?
They should. Open the ones you use daily straight after the update so you find out early if something needs attention, rather than discovering it when you need the app.
How long is the first boot after the update?
Longer than a normal restart, because Android optimises your apps and rebuilds caches in the background. Let it finish on its own and do not force it off.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
