Pixel Experience on Redmi K50i Install, Setup & First Impressions
Part of Redmi guides, Pixel Experience guides, 2022 guides.
Pixel Experience on the Redmi K50i gives you a Pixel-style Android build with Google apps already in place, on a phone that is genuinely harder to flash than most. The install is a recovery clean flash, and it works — if you use steps made for this MediaTek device. Expect small things to need fixing.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
The Redmi K50i is one of the more stubborn phones to run custom software on, and the reason is not mysterious. It is MediaTek hardware. The codename is xaga, the flashing process is different from a Qualcomm device, fewer builds get made for it, and the tools do not forgive sloppy steps the way fastboot on a POCO does.
So when a Pixel Experience build boots on this phone, that is worth talking about properly. Here is what the install looks like, what you actually get, and where it will annoy you.
What it looks like once it turns on
This is the part that makes it worth the effort. The build sits close to Pixel, so the launcher, the notification shade, the settings app and the Google apps all feel like a Google phone rather than a Xiaomi one. No MIUI skin over the top. No folder of Xiaomi apps you will never open.
The screen is a strong point here, and a clean AOSP-style base lets it show. Scrolling and switching between apps feels lighter than on a stock build, because there is simply less running in the way.
What changed compared to MIUI
- The launcher and system apps. You get the Pixel versions, including the dialer, messages and the launcher you would find on a Pixel device.
- Google apps are included. This build ships with Google services, so you are not hunting for a separate Gapps zip. The Play Store is there when setup finishes.
- Settings reorganized. Everything is where Android puts it, not where Xiaomi put it. That takes a day to get used to.
- The camera app is different. This is the trade people feel most. The stock MIUI camera is not here, and the camera you get is a different animal.
What is broken or rough
I am not going to pretend this is a flawless port, because on MediaTek it never is.
- Small things need work. A sensor that reads oddly, an occasional app crash, a setting that does not stick. You should go in expecting to find one of these.
- Battery behavior needs time. Give it several charge cycles before you decide whether it is good or bad.
- Some banking and payment apps dislike custom ROMs and may refuse to run or behave strangely.
- Support is thin compared to a Qualcomm device. If a build has a problem, you may be waiting a while for a fix, and there may not be another build to fall back to.
That last point is the honest risk on this phone. Keep your way back to MIUI ready.
What you need
- Redmi K50i with an unlocked bootloader. On MediaTek this is a separate process with its own waiting period, and it wipes the phone.
- A PC with platform tools installed, for the unlock and the recovery work.
- A custom recovery built for this device or its known counterpart.
- The Pixel Experience build for the K50i, copied to internal storage.
- A full backup, and 50% battery or better.
The install, step by step
Step 1 - unlock and prepare
Unlock the bootloader first. There is no way around this step, and it erases everything on the phone, so do it before you have data you care about. Keep platform tools and the correct USB driver on the PC so the phone is actually detected.
Step 2 - get recovery running
Flash or boot the recovery that matches this phone. If touch does not respond or internal storage shows zero, stop. A mismatched recovery will let you start a flash and then strand you halfway through it.
Step 3 - clean flash the ROM
- Reboot into recovery.
- Wipe data, cache and dalvik.
- Format data, especially if you are coming from MIUI or another ROM. This is what clears encryption.
- Flash the ROM zip and wait for it to finish completely.
- Reboot and leave the phone alone during the first boot.
Step 4 - setup and a real test
Run the setup wizard and sign in. Then use the phone normally for a few days before you form an opinion. Open your bank app. Take photos in low light. Use it on a bad signal day. Stability shows up over time, not in the first ten minutes.
Who should install this
Install it if you want Pixel software on a phone that never shipped with it, and you are comfortable with recovery and with troubleshooting small problems yourself.
Skip it if you depend on the MIUI camera, or on a specific app that has to work without argument. On MediaTek, you should assume there will be something to fix, and only flash when you have time to deal with it.
Keep the stock firmware and the way back to MIUI ready before you start. That single habit is what turns this from a risk into a weekend project.
If the driver and recovery side is where you normally stall, the free Rom Flasher tool on GitHub bundles the ADB and fastboot driver install into a couple of clicks. It is free, and the link is in the downloads section.

Full description from the video
Pixel Experience on the Redmi K50i — the install, the setup and a straight look at how this Pixel-style ROM behaves on a MediaTek phone.
The Redmi K50i is one of the harder phones to run custom software on, and the reason is simple: MediaTek hardware. The flashing process is different from a Qualcomm device, fewer ROMs get built for it, and the tools don't forgive lazy mistakes the way fastboot on a POCO does. So when a Pixel Experience build boots on a K50i, that's worth showing properly. In the video I take it from the download to a working system and then walk around: the launcher, the Google apps, the settings, and how it feels in the hand. No fake numbers, no promises. With a MediaTek flash the only questions that matter are whether it boots, whether it stays up and whether your daily apps behave.

Q: Will everything work perfectly? A: Expect small things to need work. That's just the reality of custom ROMs on MediaTek.
Q: Can I go back to MIUI? A: Yes, if you keep the stock firmware and know how to restore it.
Common questions
Why is the Redmi K50i harder to flash than a POCO?
It is a MediaTek device. The flashing process, the tools and the recovery setups are different from Qualcomm phones, and fewer custom builds are made for it. Never follow a POCO tutorial on this phone.
Does Pixel Experience on the K50i come with Google apps?
Yes. This build includes Google services and the Play Store, so you can sign in right after setup. You do not need to flash a separate Gapps package.
Do I need to unlock the bootloader for this?
Yes, and on MediaTek that is a separate process with its own waiting period. It also wipes the phone, so unlock before you have data you care about.
Can I follow a POCO F3 tutorial to flash the K50i?
No, and that is a common cause of trouble. The K50i needs steps made for xaga and a recovery built for it. Mixing tutorials between platforms is how phones end up unbootable.
Can I go back to MIUI afterwards?
Yes, if you keep the stock firmware and know how to restore it. Going back is a full flash that wipes data, so have the files ready before you start rather than after something goes wrong.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
