Unlock Bootloader on Redmi K50i Official Method, Step by Step
Part of Redmi guides, 2022 guides.
Unlocking the bootloader on the Redmi K50i uses Xiaomi's official Mi Unlock route: bind your Mi account and device in Mi Unlock status, wait out the waiting period, then unlock from a PC. The wait and the account match are the two things that trip people up. The unlock wipes the phone, so back up afterwards.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
Unlocking is the gate you walk through before any ROM, root or kernel. It is not technical. It is mostly patience, and a Mi account doing exactly what Xiaomi expects. Get that right and the unlock itself is a couple of clicks.
Here is the official route on the Redmi K50i, in the order you actually do it, with the waiting period and the boring parts included, because those are the bits people do not expect.
What you need
- The Redmi K50i, plus a Mi account using the same phone number you used to set it up.
- A Windows PC with Xiaomi's USB drivers installed.
- The Mi Unlock tool on that PC.
- A backup, because unlocking wipes the phone.
- Seven days of patience. This is the part nobody likes.
Step 1 - put your Mi account on the phone
Sign into the phone with the Mi account you plan to use for the unlock, and then use the phone normally for a while. Do not sign in and immediately go hunting for the unlock screen. Let the account sit on the device as if it lives there.
Step 2 - turn on Developer Options
Go to Settings, find the MIUI version entry, and tap it several times until Developer Options unlocks. You will get a small message confirming it is on.
Step 3 - enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking
Inside Developer Options, switch on USB debugging and OEM unlocking. These two need to be on before anything else works. USB debugging is what lets the PC talk to the phone, and OEM unlocking is the permission Xiaomi wants to see.
Step 4 - bind your account and device in Mi Unlock status
Open Mi Unlock status and bind your Mi account to this device. This is the step that starts the clock. Bind it and then leave it alone.
Do not switch accounts, do not reset the phone, and do not sign out of Mi. Whatever you bound is what you unlock with, and changing it mid-wait is how people lose their place in line.
Step 5 - wait out the waiting period
The waiting period exists and you have to serve it. Seven days is the usual figure on this route, and shortcuts around it are not worth it. Any tool or trick promising to skip the wait risks your account, and an account that gets flagged is a much bigger problem than a week of waiting.
Use the phone normally during this time. Nothing needs to be plugged in.
Step 6 - boot into fastboot
When the wait is done, power the phone off and hold Volume Down and Power until the fastboot screen appears. Plug it into the PC.
Step 7 - run Mi Unlock
Open the Mi Unlock tool on your PC and sign in with the same account you bound to the phone. Sign in with a different account and it will refuse, every time. When you are logged in with the right one, connect the phone and hit unlock.
Step 8 - let the phone wipe and reboot
The phone wipes itself and reboots. That is expected, not an error. When it comes up, set it up again from scratch, and then restore your backup. Your bootloader is now unlocked, and the rest of the flashing you want to do is open to you.
Where people get stuck
- Using a different account than the one bound to the phone. It will not unlock. The account and the device have to match.
- Trying to skip the wait period. A tweak that gets you past the week can get your account flagged, and that is a worse problem than waiting.
- Locking the bootloader again with a custom ROM on the phone. That is a brick. Only relock on a fully stock ROM.
- The PC not recognising the phone. That is the USB drivers, not the phone. Install them and check again.
One honest note
The waiting period is the annoying part, and there is no way around it that is worth taking. Plan for it. Bind your account, note the date, and come back when it is done. Everything after that is a short session at the PC, and the unlock itself takes minutes.
Also worth knowing before you start: some banking apps complain about an unlocked bootloader. That is normal, it is not something you did wrong, and it is the trade you make for being able to flash anything at all.
If you want to skip the driver hunt, the free Rom Flasher tool installs the ADB and fastboot driver on your PC so you are not stuck in Device Manager on the day the wait ends. It is free, and the link is in the downloads section.

Common questions
How long do I have to wait to unlock the bootloader on the Redmi K50i?
The official route has a waiting period, usually seven days, which starts when you bind your Mi account to the device in Mi Unlock status. Use the phone normally during that time, and do not change the bound account.
Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty?
It officially changes your support status. That is the honest answer, and it is the same on most Xiaomi devices. Decide you are fine with that before you start.
Will unlocking the bootloader wipe my Redmi K50i?
Yes. The unlock resets the phone, so you will set it up again from scratch and restore your backup afterwards. Copy anything you care about off the device before you unlock.
Can I lock the bootloader again later?
Yes, but only on a fully stock ROM. Locking it with a custom ROM installed is how you end up with a brick, so if you ever want to relock, go back to stock first.
Why does Mi Unlock say my account cannot unlock this device?
It almost always means the account signed into Mi Unlock is not the same account bound to the phone in Mi Unlock status. Use the exact account you bound, and make sure the waiting period has passed.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
