HarmonyOS v14.0.1 on Redmi K50i Install & First Boot Look
Part of Redmi guides, MIUI guides, 2023 guides.
HarmonyOS v14.0.1 runs on the Redmi K50i, and it is one of those experiments you try because it is possible. The shell is completely foreign — different launcher, different settings layout, different animation feel. The flash replaces the whole system and wipes the phone, and the first boot takes longer than you would expect. Do not interrupt it.
The video starts muted so it does not blast at you — tap the speaker to hear it, or open it on YouTube.
You already know MIUI. You have probably tried an AOSP build. HarmonyOS on a Xiaomi phone is a different kind of curiosity: a whole interface from another ecosystem, running on hardware it was never built for.
That is the appeal, and it is worth being clear about what you are getting into. This is a full system swap. Everything on the phone goes, the interface is nothing like MIUI, and the first boot takes its time. If you go in expecting your familiar phone with a paint job, you will be disappointed. If you want to see what a completely different shell feels like on a K50i, this is the one.
What you need
- The HarmonyOS v14.0.1 build made for the Redmi K50i. A package from another model will not boot.
- An unlocked bootloader, which means a PC and the usual wipe.
- Platform tools and the ADB and fastboot driver installed, so your Windows machine actually sees the phone.
- A custom recovery like TWRP, if your install path goes through one.
- The vbmeta file, if you are coming from stock MIUI and your flash wants verity and verification disabled.
- A backup on a PC. This one is not optional — there is no partial way in.
What it looks like when it boots
The home screen is the first surprise. Different launcher, different arrangement, different icon treatment. It does not read as MIUI with a theme on top — it reads as a different phone.
Then the settings. The layout is not the one you know from MIUI. Options sit in different places, and the settings app is thinner on the Xiaomi-specific extras you are used to. If you go looking for a MIUI toggle, expect it to not exist in the same spot, or to not exist at all.
Animations are the third thing you notice. They have their own character, and after a few minutes of scrolling it stops feeling wrong and starts feeling like an alternative.
What actually changes
- The entire interface, launcher and settings layout come from HarmonyOS rather than MIUI.
- Xiaomi-specific services and MIUI extras are largely gone, so this is not a build for someone who depends on them.
- The system behaves like a fresh phone from another manufacturer, which is exactly the point of trying it.
- General responsiveness to normal use is the thing to judge for yourself — it depends on the build and how it was packaged for this device.
The install, in short
Unlock the bootloader first, because nothing else works without it and the unlock wipes the phone anyway. Get your tools and drivers in place on the PC so the phone is actually recognised. Flash the build the same way you would flash any custom system image for the K50i, and if you are pathing through TWRP, flash the package there.
Then the part that matters most: do not interrupt the first boot. It can take several minutes. Longer than MIUI takes after a reset. Leave the phone plugged in and alone, and let it finish.
Where people get stuck
- Downloading the wrong package. A build made for another device will flash and then fail to boot. Match the K50i exactly.
- Pulling the cable or forcing a reboot during first boot. A slow boot is not a stuck boot. Interrupting it is how a working flash turns into a bootloop.
- Skipping the backup. A full system swap resets internal storage. If your photos are only on the phone, they are gone.
- Ignoring the vbmeta step. Coming from stock MIUI, a missing vbmeta flash is a common reason the first boot fails.
Who should try this
Try it if you have a spare evening, you are comfortable in fastboot and recovery, and you want to see what a non-MIUI, non-AOSP shell feels like on this hardware. Do not try it if this is your only phone and you need your bank app, your Xiaomi services and your saved data tomorrow morning — that is the honest filter.
Going back is straightforward. A stock MIUI fastboot package flashed with the standard script puts the phone back to what it was, and the bootloader stays unlocked, so you keep the option open. Some apps that check device integrity may object to a custom system build, so check that before you rely on one.
If the driver setup on the PC side is what slows you down, the free Rom Flasher tool on GitHub bundles the ADB and fastboot driver install into a couple of clicks. It is free, and the link is in the downloads section.

HarmonyOS v14.0.1 on the Redmi K50i — a completely different interface running on Xiaomi hardware, from the flash to the first boot.
HarmonyOS on a Xiaomi phone is one of those things you try because it's possible. The whole shell is foreign: different launcher, different settings layout, a different feel in the animations. That's the appeal. What matters before you flash is that this is a full system swap, so everything on the phone goes, and the first boot takes longer than you'd expect. Sit with it.

⚠️ Worth Knowing Before You Flash
- This replaces the whole system — back up your data, there's no partial way in.
- Don't interrupt the first boot. It can take several minutes, and that's normal.
- Download the build made for your device. A package from another model won't boot.
❓ Common Questions
- Do I need a PC? Yes — unlocking the bootloader and flashing both need one.
- Will banking apps still work? Depends on the build. Check before you rely on it.
- Can I go back to MIUI? Yes, a MIUI fastboot package flashes over it.
Common questions
Does HarmonyOS v14.0.1 work properly on the Redmi K50i?
It boots on the K50i and gives you a completely different interface. It is a community build, so treat the version you flash as the version you have rather than expecting a maintained release.
Do I need a PC to install HarmonyOS on the K50i?
Yes. Both unlocking the bootloader and flashing the system need a PC with platform tools and the fastboot driver installed. There is no way to do the whole thing from the phone.
Will my banking apps work after flashing HarmonyOS?
It depends on the build. Some apps refuse to run on a custom system image because of integrity checks. Test the apps you rely on before you make it your daily phone.
How long does the first boot take?
Several minutes, and sometimes longer than the boot on MIUI. Do not interrupt it, do not pull the cable, and do not force a reboot — an interrupted first boot can lead to a bootloop.
Can I go back to MIUI afterwards?
Yes. Download the stock MIUI fastboot package for the Redmi K50i and flash it with the standard script. That wipes the phone again, but it puts you back on a system you know.
Before you flash
- Back up everything you would miss — unlocking and flashing usually wipe the phone.
- Check the file is built for your exact model and region.
- Keep a PC and a working cable around so a bootloop can be recovered.
